The sub atomic particles were accelerated to nearly the speed of the light before smashing them together. The first protons would be injected into a 27 km ring shaped tunnel. The large hadron collider was situated 600 meters beneath the surface of the earth. The experiment was to discover how particles acquire mass. The construction of the large hadron collider has been started since 2003. The componets of atom will be smashed so that it gives an idea how they are made.Nearly 9,000 physicists around the world waited to witness the startup of the experiment.Some scientists criticized that the collision of the protons could eventually destroy the Earth. Hope we will be still alive after this experiment.
